Propane Topics

What is propane?

Most people think of propane as the white container attached to a barbecue grill. But propane has long proven its versatility for heating homes, water, cooking, drying clothes, fueling gas fireplaces, and even as an alternative fuel for vehicles.

Propane is a hydrocarbon (C3H8) produced from both natural gas processing and crude oil refining. It occurs naturally as a gas but can be liquefied if subjected to moderately increased pressure. It is stored and transported in its compressed liquid form, but by opening a valve to release propane from a pressurized storage container, it is vaporized into a gas for use. Propane is non-toxic and odorless, an identifying odor is added so the gas can be readily detected.

Why use propane?

Propane is clean heat:
Propane has long been recognized as the "green" energy that can actually help homeowners cut emissions and protect the environment.

Propane is reliable warmth:
Because almost 90 percent of all propane is produced right here in the U.S. propane delivers heat and warmth when you need it most. Propane gas is the reliable choice for millions of homeowners.

Propane is a good value:
Propane fuel works harder and costs less! Because propane burns hotter and more evenly than other fuels it's more efficient. This savings means most propane appliances are able to pay for themselves sooner than their electric counterparts.

Propane is safe:
Propane has a remarkable safety record! Thanks to the stringent codes and regulations developed by the propane industry and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) statistics show the safest way to heat is with gas.

Why is propane safe.

Propane's remarkable safety record is due in large part to the stringent codes and regulations developed by the propane industry and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Here's why statistics from the NFPA prove propane is the safe way to heat:

  • Propane won't ignite when combined with air unless the source of ignition reaches 940° F.
  • Propane gas is nontoxic and produces minimal emissions.
  • Propane is not harmful to soil or water .
  • The Propane Education and Research Council teaches the safe use of propane with an effective preventative maintenance program, GAS Check (Gas Appliance System Check).

What are the residential uses of propane?
