Vented -vs- Vent-Free

Vent-free units
Vent-free units operate without a flue or venting. They're an efficient heat source because nearly 100% of the heat stays in your house. However, vent-free logs will not give you that "roaring fire" look; the flame is not as realistic or as high as you will find with most vented logs. Also keep in mind that "vent-free" is a misnomer in that the unit vents into the room where it is installed. Vent-free units add moisture to the air in your home, so it's important to install them in rooms with proper ventilation to avoid formation of mold, mildew, or condensation.

Also, the by-products of combustion such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, nitrous oxide and nitrogen dioxide are released into the room when a vent-free unit is burning. Some localities do not permit the installation of vent-free units. Vent-free units are not a good choice for individuals who have allergies, asthma, emphysema or sensitivities to odors or chemicals. Vent-Free units should only be used as a supplemental heat source.

Vented
With vented fire logs, you will enjoy a more realistic looking flame that operates with an open flue or damper. These logs are more decorative than they are efficient as a heat source because much of the heat goes up the chimney.

Direct-vent
Direct-vent units operate differently because they use outside air for combustion and vent all by products to the outside. Most direct vent units have a beautiful flame picture, are quite efficient and many can be used to replace a furnace to heat a room. Vented hearth products do not affect the air quality of the home and are recommended in most situations.
